Charleswood: A Winter Playground for All Ages

Mar 10, 2016

Nestled on the edge of beautiful Assiniboine Forest, the woodsy Winnipeg neighbourhood of Charleswood is renowned for its wildlife, tranquil setting and friendly residents.

It also happens to be a hotbed for cross-country ski enthusiasts.

The Charleswood Ski Club is the perfect place to sign up for ski trips, take a lesson or connect with fellow cross-country ski fans.

The ski club boasts 200 regular members from Winnipeg and the surrounding area. For the $25 annual membership fee (which includes a Canadian Association of Nordic Ski Instructors certified lesson at Windsor Park Nordic Centre), members can enjoy everything from day trips to week-long ski holidays out of province.

The Adventure

The trips are open to recreational skiers of all ages and abilities. Participants use the trip rating guide in order to find a group of skiers at the same level, ensuring that everyone is comfortable and set up for a good time.

Here is a sample of their trips and events:

  • Canmore, Alberta Week — This trip runs from March 5 to 12 and costs $383 per person for double occupancy, which includes Welcome Pizza Night and accommodations at the Ramada Inn & Suites in Canmore.
  • Pool Night — On March 19 at 7 p.m., members and friends will gather at Triple B’s Restaurant at 121 Scurfield Blvd. in Winnipeg to play pool, enjoy snacks and have fun!

What to Expect

The club’s chartered bus trips shuttle groups to a wide range of excellent ski locales across the province and into Ontario. Some of the top destinations include Spruce Woods, Falcon Lake, Pinawa, Grand Beach, Sandilands, Turtle Mountain and Riding Mountain, as well as the Duck Mountains and Kenora.

A typical day tour begins in Winnipeg at a central meeting place. After loading all equipment onto the bus, participants can catch some quiet time or chat with friends while the bus transports the group safely and comfortably to the day’s ski destination.

Once at the ski area, some members try to cover as many kilometres as possible while others are happy to ski at a more leisurely pace.

After a full day of enjoying the trails, fresh air and camaraderie, members board the bus back to Winnipeg, relaxing as they savour the wonderful feeling that only comes from a day of fresh air and exercise!
