Newly Expanded Charleswood Library Offers Much More Than Books

Jan 18, 2016

When you think library, you think books. That's a logical connection, right? While the Charleswood Library has plenty of books – all free to borrow of course – they offer much more as well. The Charleswood Library is a meeting place, a classroom and a bridge between residents and the community at large.

Located in Charleswood Square mall, the new Charleswood Library opened in 2015, offering ample parking and over 14,000 sq. ft. of space. Along with the book stacks, the library includes a program room that holds 60 people, a beautiful fireplace and reading area, a teen area, a small meeting room, and a children's area with a large "Poet Tree".

Charleswood Library

"It's a really great space," explains Nadine McCaughan, Branch Head of the Charleswood Library. "There are plenty of comfortable chairs for people to read and relax, the lighting in the library is beautiful and people feel very comfortable here. It's open, modern and nature-focused. We have a great selection of books and reading materials, very friendly and knowledgeable staff, and the actual space itself is so welcoming and peaceful."

Library Programming

With so much space to spread out, they are now able to offer a full range of programs for people of all ages and backgrounds.

"We have programming for children, families, teens and adults," Nadine explains. "We have two family story times, two baby rhyme times, two adult books clubs, a tween book club for people aged 9-12, and we also have a variety of family programs like a Lego block program and Family Literacy Fun Days."

While much of their programming revolves around reading, today's libraries are pushing the idea of literacy one step further.

Supporting Literacy

"Libraries support literacy, but that can mean a lot of things," Nadine explains. "It might be helping to gain computer literacy – which is the basis for our computer/Internet basics course, a two-hour workshop designed to help people get connected. We also offer 'Makers' programming which helps people use newer technologies like 3D. We are here to show people how to use these tools so they can enrich their lives through the knowledge."

The library team is also helping community residents get active outside the library.

"We have initiatives to foster health literacy as well," Nadine explains. "For example, we have a literary adventure walking club. We've also connected with the Charleswood Historical Society and Charleswood Horticulture Society, and Friends of the Harte trail. We love working with other community groups, seeing what they need and how we can support each other."
