Qualico Communities is proud to contribute to the sustainable growth of Winnipeg’s neighbourhoods. As a land developer, it is our duty to meet the City of Winnipeg’s obligations in planting trees within boulevards as part of our Development Agreement. This is in alignment with our motto, True to our nature— as we look to help grow and sustain the natural habitats and greenspaces within our communities. This initiative not only fulfills our obligations with the City of Winnipeg; but also enhances the natural beauty of our communities.

How do I get a Boulevard Tree?

Qualico Communities plants trees according to the City of Winnipeg’s Boulevard Tree Planting Guidelines. Tree plantings take place once a year, in the Spring.

Following the City of Winnipeg’s planting guidelines, tree locations are determined by a third-party landscape architect. Lots must have final grading completed and be approved by the developer’s engineering consultant before the landscape architect evaluates each yard for a tree.

Trees are planted on the boulevard portion of the lot which belongs to the City of Winnipeg. Most yards will get a tree, however there are spacing requirements that may prevent some yards from receiving one. Trees must be a certain distance from each other and from intersections, light standards, driveways, fire hydrants, hydro poles, manholes, sewers and clear of all underground services. Many cul-de-sac yards will not receive a boulevard tree due to the minimum space between driveways.

According to the City of Winnipeg’s 'Right Tree, Right Place' guidelines, the minimum required distances from existing infrastructure are:

  • 6 metres from street intersections
  • 3 metres from light standards
  • 3 metres from fire hydrants
  • 3 metres from hydro poles
  • 3 metres from manholes/catch basins/sewer grates
  • 1.5 metres from private approaches (driveways)

Sometimes the timing of a lot being ready for a boulevard tree could occur after finalizing the list for the current planting season. If you think your lot is ready but do not receive a tree during the fall plant season, you could be on the following year’s list provided your lot is not affected by the spacing exemptions above.

Warranty

Unless otherwise stated in the development agreement, Qualico Communities is responsible for regular maintenance of the trees and planting areas for two years. Any trees that are deemed unacceptable during the two-year maintenance period, will be replaced and maintained for an additional maintenance period term.

After the two-year period has passed, it becomes the homeowner's responsibility to maintain the boulevard tree that resides on their boulevard. Once under homeowner care if the tree’s health deteriorates, warranty through Qualico Communities no longer applies and the homeowner would need to contact 311 for the City to replace.
